Sweets
Sweets, 17yr old, Bread unknown, sorrel, 16 hands, 1079 lbs (12/20/15), Mare. Looking for her forever home! Came to us on 11/14/13 from JCAC. Sweets was removed from a bad situation, where she was intentionally starved and abused. Sweets was severely malnourished and had terribly infected saddle sores. She was scared to death but even then she was so sweet, that we started calling her Sweets and it stuck as her new name. It took us several months to get her back to physical health. We are still working with Sweets' fear of being mounted under saddle, but she has the sweetest nature and is a really good girl. We have ridden her bareback once and she did fine. She needs a special someone with the time and patience to overcome her fear and teach her that the saddle doesn't have to hurt. Sweets is leasable and adoptable! Storm 15 yrs, White Flea bitten, Mustang, Gelding Born 2001 in Utah by BLM brand Registration US Government 01 762541 Last Coggins 4/9/15 Looking for his forever home! Storm's owner's daughter-in-law called us, she was retiring and could not afford to keep him. She sent us pictures of where he was living and we asked if any other rescue would take him. After two days of waiting with no response, Keith could not stand it anymore and asked me to go get him. We named him Storm on the way home because he can be quiet but is full of Thunder and Lightning. He came home to the back yard at Pasture Pals ER 11-23-14. Storm was so terrified of everything even the dirt. You see he had been in his stall for over 14yrs, never turned out, never trained. It had been so long since he felt anything but his own manure under his feet, that he was not sure what the dirt was. Storm may be available for adoption when he has learned to trust people and had time to train. Storm finally trusted us enough to bring the vet out. He is ready for some serious training and needs a DEDICATED VOLUNTEER to work with him! Please help us save more horses like Storm! Storm needs a SPONSOR to help with his feed and care costs! The day before he came. Taz is a 9yr old, Dark Brown, Small Standard Hinny. Unusual as they are, a Hinny is the off spring of a sire that is a horse and a dame that is a donkey. He is a hansom little man. Taz's owner called us about a week ago and asked us to come get him. Taz had broken out of his pasture and was in with the neighbors mares. He is a strong willed and a little crazy boy, who they had rescued about 5 years before. The man who formerly owned Taz had him chained to some tires, that he dragged around. Inn an attempt to control him, the former owner seriously abused poor little Taz. That is where he got the unusual scars on his neck. Tip did a good job getting him healthy the last few years, but could not care for him any longer. Well Taz is the perfect name for this little crazy hinny. He will learn how to behave, here at Pasture Pals. Taz got his shots and Coggins, but is still waiting to be gelded. Taz is available for adoption to the home with the ability and knowledge to help him!

Lilly before she came to Pasture Pals ER 3/16/16
Lilly, 12 year old, Black, Mini Mare. 38 inches, 293 lbs ( 1/27/17), in foal Lilly's owners contacted us. They had saved her and were trying to help her, but felt they just could not do enough for her. Lilly is terribly afraid and was severely abused by a past owner. They so wanted to help Lilly get better that, when they could not help her, they contacted us. This was a lucky day, we had a space for a mini available and Alex agreed to sponsor her! So Lilly came home to Pasture Pals ER on 3/20/16. Lilly is getting better every day. She is still afraid, but is learning humans aren't so bad through the loving care of our volunteers at PPER! Lilly got her vet evaluation and she looks in pretty good health. Our vet is researching the growth in the left eye. The growth is smaller, maybe because she is less stressed and it appears she does have partial vision in that eye now. Lilly is not quite as terrified of everyone now. She even comes up for treats. Once we get the lead rope on she is happy to be groomed and loved on, just as long as you don't touch her face! She is getting better and we are working on her fears. Lilly is a good mommy to her new foal Cherokee! Can you help us save more like Lilly? Adopt! Sponsor! Donate! Volunteer! www.PasturePalsER.com PasturePalsER@aol.com

She was obese and in foal. Her feet were horrible and she was pretty afraid of everything but she kept all the boys in line! I like this mini Mare! Mamma and Me seemed to hit it off, she comes up to me looking for scratches, and I know just the right spots. Mamma is no longer afraid of most people. Mamma gave birth to Gigi on 11/10/16. Since then she has lost a hundred pounds and is no longer obese! Jinxy may be deformed, but he doesn't know it! With his spunk and friendliness he makes a great addition to our petting zoo! Jinxy's back has continued to grow out of shape and we hope it has stopped now that he is 3. His feet are healed up and he is at a good weight for him. He walks well on lead line and loves attention. His legs are straightening out and he is getting stronger. Little guy had to have a hoof trim when he was only 7 days old to help with straightening those little legs. He also had to have a little extra help with nursing because he was so tall he had a hard time reaching his mamma to nurse. But he is doing well now best friends with Gigi. Playing and running around the paddock. Cherokee is now weaning. He is eating well and starting to let people touch him. His mamma Lilly was so afraid that she made his scared too. Trigger ADOPTED!
Trigger 18 year old, Blond, Belgian Draft, Gelding 19 hands, 1728lbs (1/28/17) Currently a resident, but may be available to an exceptional forever home after some rehab. Trigger's caretaker Rose contacted us because he needed a home! We only had one spot available and felt we could help him, so after posting him for rehoming. When no one would go get him, Trigger came to us 3/3/16. Trigger is a sweet boy, had tying up issues when he came to us, and could use some more weight. Trigger is now an attention hog, always wanting to get into everyone's business and very curious. He has quickly became a favorite with the volunteers, but as big as he is if you want to work with one of the other animals, Trigger has to be kept from pushing over everyone sometime! Trigger's tying up problem has improved since we put him on a high protein low carb diet, however he still needs some physical therapy. Lots of backing up and turning are in Trigger's near future to get those hind legs better control. He has been ridden in pony rides and with the bit less bridle. We were told that he also drives, but have not had the harness and cart to test him. We are working on his ability to pick up his feet and teaching him to respect people's spaces.
Trigger went to his new home with Saige 5/28/17

Jessie Day One at Pasture Pals ER ADOPTED!
It was a complete surprise to me on Sunday Morning, when a rusty little one horse trailer pulled into my back yard. We did not have a fence, stall, rope, tack, or even feed. But when Keith saw Jessie and the way she was surviving, he bought her. I ran out to the trailer and looked, there stood a scarred up, frighten, emaciated horse. She was wormy, full of lice, had scars from the terrible things her original owner has done to her. She was so sick and frightened, she fell when they tried to unload her. I was not prepared for a horse and had no clue one was coming, but there was NO WAY they were taking Jessie back. It took over an hour sitting offering her a bowl of carrots before she would even take one. After 4 hours the men came back. I was grooming Jessie by then. And so it began. We did not intend to be a rescue...but here we are!

Flossy Mae, 7 yr old, Light Gray, Standard Donkey, Jenny, Foaled 2008 in Goldsboro, NC. We named her Flossy Mae. Flossy is missing the tip of one ear and half of the other, and has elf feet. She is a good mommy! She is in foal. She is in good health other then her feet, and is very sweet. For a feral donkey to stand and let you rub her and do all the tests and shots without a buck or kick was amazing. She loves to be scratched and rubbed, and doesn't even give too much trouble when we try to pick up those poor feet. She is very smart and has already learned feeding routines. She has had her first taste of feed and her first horse cookies. Can't wait to see what she thinks of carrots and apples! Flossy has decided that humans make pretty good ear and back scratches, and will come to be rubbed most of the time now. Her feet are getting better, but have a long way to go. Flossy was adopted and went to live with Susan and Greg as well as Buck and Casey!

Dottie, when she came to Pasture Pals ER. ADOPTED!
Dottie's owner contacted us on 4/3/14. Dottie had been left with her over Four years ago, when her father had a stroke and went back to live with his family up north. She knew nothing about horses and did not know how to care for her. When Dottie got an eye infection it was not treated properly and she gradually went blind. Because Dottie was already "dead broke" had been a trail horse and even rented out, she adapted pretty well to her blindness. Unfortunately Dottie never got any dental or hoof care either, so her wave mouth and overgrown teeth made it impossible for her to eat and she was starving. Here hooves were pretty much just overgrown and otherwise were fairly healthy. We searched for other rescues to take Dottie but were unable to find any. They could deal with a starving horse with no problem, but a blind and starving horse with little or no possibility of being rehomed was a no go. One of our volunteers offered to foster Dottie for us, and so on 4/7/14, we took the 2 hour drive to pick up Dottie. Our vet Shannon Baker, met us on the road home and made sure Dottie was not contagious and could be quarantined at the house. Unfortunately the foster was never heard from again, so Dottie spent her days in the big stall where she was safe, eating well, and gets supervised turn out in the fenced back yard grass for a few hours every day. If you can help us raise money for Dottie's surgery and continued care, please donate!

Our vet Shannon Baker, met us on the road home and made sure Dottie was not contagious and could be quarantined at the house. Unfortunately the foster did not come through for Dottie so she ended up staying here at Pasture Pals ER. For now Dottie is spending her days in the special holding area at Rock Pillar, where she is safe, eating well, and has a small pasture. After she had gained some weight and could stand the surgery, we had to have both of Dottie's infected eyes removed. Dottie needs exercise to gain back her muscle and is so ready to go. She wants to go all the time and needs to have a job. Dottie would make a great horse for a therapeutic riding school, where she could be riden on lead and she could be an inspiration to those who have to overcome and survive! The day he came to Pasture Pals ER. This little man came to be called the Prince of Pasture Pals ER. Prince Mini Paint/Pony, Gelding, 35 inches tall, 3yrs old. The family contacted me. They had purchased him for their children and when they got him home, found he had some behavior problems they did not know how to work with. They did not want to put him back into the "horse trader" system, so they contacted me. He also had some very sore spots and bite marks. I found some very painful spots on his back, that may have explain some of his "bad" behavior. It turned out Prince has some really bad behaviors, to word other horses and people. He appears to have gotten away with way too much in his short little life. He continually challenges all the other horses big and small, and this may be why he has so many bite marks, the horses were defending themselves! And this is the reason he was put up for sale, when this couple purchased him. He is now in the back yard at Pasture Pals ER. He has gotten a lot better with his attitude and now comes up to be rubbed by adults, but is still afraid of children. Prince has a lot of training hours ahead of him and will take time to be the good little pony he should be. If you would like to Sponsor Prince please go to PasturePalsER.com!

First day at Pasture Pals ER. Between feeding times 3/25/15, I had received a call form a lady in a panic. People had moved and two donkey's were stranded around the pond. They had tried to catch them with ropes and pieces of fences but couldn't catch them. I thought she was just calling me for advice on how to catch and load them and was happy to tell her how we do it. But it turned out they only wanted one of the donkeys to keep, the other needed to be rehomed. I got Keith to agreed for us to help them catch the donkeys and to take one to it's new home and the other to the Pasture Pals Equine Rescue. Keith and I are pretty experienced at catching horses and donkeys, the humane way. LOL (you can only wonder why) So that morning after feeding time (Doug helped do the feeding for us. Thank you Doug!) We loaded the round ring panels and headed out. Within 20 minutes of getting set up at the pond, we had both donkeys on the trailer and were ready to take them to their new homes. One was a gray standard donkey jenny and she was dropped off at her new forever home, the other a large standard jenny, who we named Rose, came home with us. The only reason we could help save these donkeys is that we had rehomed 5 donkeys in the last two months, and that made room to take in another. Here are the first pictures of Rose at Pasture Pals ER in quarantine. She is reported to be 7 years old and appears to be in good health. She is a good weight and just a little wary of people. She had her shots, a vet check, and a farrier visit right away! Rose is a light Sorrel/Red Large Standard Donkey Jenny. Rose found her forever home!

Harley came to us 7/20/15. His owner contacted us because she could no longer afford his care. She had tried to rehome Harley, but no one would take him because of a hoof infection and because he had lost his right eye to a kick from another horse. They were considering putting Harley down, but we and the vet believed his infected hoof was curable with the knowledge and experience we have at Pasture Pasture Pals ER. Harley is a very sweet boy and found love and a place to heal here at Pasture Pals ER. Harley quickly became a favorite among the volunteer. This is a big teddy bear of a horse, who loves attention. Harley had his hoof operation and we removed the canker. He is happily running around the Pastures at West Olive. Harley is sound and is being worked regularly to get him back into shape. HARLEY IIS ADOPTED and went to live with Olivia and Ellen Stroud.

White over Sorrel, Mini Paint Filly, Foaled 3/22/17 at PPER 25 inches tall, 53lbs (6/2/17) baby is growing fast! CC came to us with a 8 month old still nursing, Sophia her 4 year old by her side, and in foal with another. Snow is the sire of all three of CC's babies. This little one was born this morning! We did not think CC was ready, but she sure was! Beautiful healthy tiny baby came right after the storm passed over. 3/22/17 Scarlet is tiny and CC is a good mommy. Scarlet is a little spitfire. 24 hours after she was born she was already bucking, running, and jumping. She is outgoing and very curious. Scarlet is just the cutest little fireball I've ever seen. She would make a good little show pony one day. They will not be available for adoption until after Scarlet is fully weaned. Can You Help Us Help Them? Adopt! Sponsor! Donate! Volunteer! BB ADOPTED!
Foal 4/6/17, dark brown, Sandard, Donkey, Jennet BB is currently a sponsored resident. Alex advocated for Granny and BB to come to PPER on 5/4/17. BB came to us a as month old baby nursing on Granny a 30+ year old jenny. The farm owner bought some donkeys as guard animals for his cows. He did not know that they require the same hoof care and vetting that a horse needs. He ended up with more donkeys then cows, and so we did what we could to find homes for some of them. Granny was a good mommy to this beautiful little baby. BB even got right between me and the farrier trying to nurse, while we were trying to cut Granny's hooves. We will do everything we can to make sure BB grows up healthy and happy. Unfortunately, we were just to late to save her mommy, and Granny passed. BB is understandably upset since her mommy passed, but she has decided that humans are good scratchers and huggers and comes up to pretty much everyone looking for attention in her quite and shy way. She is growing like a weed now with the good nutrition! BB lost her mommy. Poor Granny just could not go any further. This baby needs all of our love and special attention.

Bright Eyes
2.5 year old, White, Small Standard, Donkey, Jenny 11.1 hands, 364lbs (7/8/17) Keith Daniels Paid for Bright Eyes from the farm. She is a Boarded Resident and not available for adoption at this time. Bright eyes came to PPER to be boarded after she was paid for By Keith Daniels. This donkey came from a local farm. The farm owner bought some donkeys as guard animals for his cows. He did not know that they require the same hoof care and vetting that a horse needs. He ended up with more donkeys then cows, and so we did what we could to find homes for some of them. Bright eyes had some challanges. She had several infected bites, was badly in need of a hoof trim, and had some really bad sunburn. She was also in foal. She was curious and studied us a lot, but still could not bring herself to let us rub her until after she had her baby. I am able to just stroke he nose a little right at first, and she did come up for teats and feed. I was sure it would not be long before she realized that we are the best back scratchers in the world. We wanted to get our hands on her and fix those feet, but did not want to do anything to jeopardize the foal she was carrying. We took it slow and easy. After a few weeks, her bites and sunburn were healing nicely and she was eating well. She already had milk and we expect that the foal would be born in the next few weeks. Many of these donkeys were pregnant and still nursing over aged foals, so without even knowing her age, it was hard to be sure. Turned out she was ready for baby Elle who was born a little over a month after they came to us. Bright eyes had her baby Elle may on 6/24/17! Bright eyes is now letting us scratch her and takes treats! She is such a good mommy and is starting to like her people time too! Bright eyes still needs a dedicated volunteer for her training and just to love her! Help Us Help Them! Adopt! Sponsor! Donate! Volunteer! Share! PasturePalsER.com PasturePalsER@aol.com

1.5 year old, Standard, Brown, Donkey, Jack Looking for his forever home! Came to PPER on 5/4/17. This donkey came from a local farm. The farm owner bought some donkeys as guard animals for his cows. He did not know that they require the same hoof care and vetting that a horse needs. He ended up with more donkeys then cows, and so we did what we could to find homes for some of them. Charlie looks pretty healthy except he is pretty skinny and has terrible hooves that are obviously painful. We will plan get those taken care of on our next farrier visit, but they will take time to get right. Soft cow pasture and lack of farrier care is really bad on donkeys hooves! Charlie is coming around to liking getting scratches and is very curious about everything we do. He has not acted in the least bit aggressive so far, and we hope to keep it that way. We will do everything we can to get Charlie healthy and happy.

10 yr old?, Paint, Standard, Donkey, Jack Joe was one of 7 feral donkeys that we got a call to rescue from Mills River. Joe will be living at PPER and is not available for adoption. Here Joe will get healthy and find out that people can be good. He is a sweet easy going kind of guy. With infected and bleeding bits, terrible hooves, bad sunburn, lice, worms, and exhausted after the round up and long trip to PPER. Poor Joe just wanted to rest his first couple of days. He has been very good with all of our pocking and prodding, putting medicines on his bites, and even giving him his shots. Joe is starting to show his personality and is eating well. He is so clam and loves attention as long as you move slowly around him. Joe needs a lot of medical care and so he will be at PPER at least until we can get him healthy.
